In the Asian Football Confederation, the AFC Women’s Asian Cup is where the nations must deliver to earn their spot to take on the world’s best.

At the 2018 Asian Cup, the Westfield Matildas went in to the tournament knowing a fifth-placed finish would be enough to get them a ticket to France.

In a tough group, Australia drew their opening match with Korea Republic, before swatting aside Vietnam 8-0, with Sam Kerr getting a double.

It meant a draw against Japan in the final group match would be enough to ensure the Westfield Matildas would qualify and they did just that, Kerr’s 86th-minute strike enough to earn a 1-1 result.

The Westfield Matildas scored two more goals in the penalty shootout win over Thailand in the Semi-Final to complete the 11 goals that got the side to France.
