Van Egmond and Chidiac set for return; Sydney and Melbourne derbies on the cards

Round 2 of the A-League Women's kicks off on Friday night, Van Egmond and Chidiac make their return after time overseas.

Our Australian-based players thrived last week in the opening round of the A-League Women's, while Emily van Egmond and Alex Chidiac make their return after time abroad.

Emily van Egmond is set to make her first appearance since 2018 for hometown club Newcastle Jets when they play their first home game of the season. 

McDonald Jones Stadium is set to host the Jets clash with A-League Women's newcomers Wellington Phoneix. 


After holding Wanderers to a 0-0 all draw last week, Phoneix impressed on their first appearance in the league. 

While Jets are looking to pick up their first win of the season after going down 3-1 to Sydney FC last week. 

Van Egmond will be a welcome return for Ash Wilson's Jets side with the experienced midfielder able to influence some new faces in the Jets squad.

Brisbane Roar and Perth Glory go head-to-head once again, with Brisbane now hosting the encounter. 

Roar looked to have sealed all three points against Perth last week before Glory scored two late goals to record their first win of the season - their first win in over a season.


Katrina Gorry made her much-anticipated return in orange after giving birth to her daughter Harper earlier in the year, Gorry is slowly working her way back to regular minutes for Brisbane. 

Jamilla Rankin played a full game in Roar's defeat last weekend.

The first Sydney derby of the season will be an interesting encounter, after Western Sydney Wanderers were held to a 0-0 all draw at the hands of Wellington they will be hoping they can pick up their first win of the season against cross-town rivals Sydney FC. 

Sydney FC opened their account with a 3-1 win over the Jets, Remy Siemsen opened the scoring early in the second half for Sydney. 

Jessika Nash made her first appearance for Sydney last weekend, after making the move from Canberra United. 


While Jada Whyman had a quiet day in goals last game she will be busy against her former teammates in the Sydney derby. 

Bryleeh Henry made an appearance late in Wanderers first game of the season and showed her dangerous speedy almost instantly and will be crucial to helping Western Sydney pick up points against Sydney. 

Moving over to the other derby, Melbourne City and Melbourne Victory go head-to-head.

Victory were the team to beat after the first round, beating Adelaide United 5-1. 

Both Melbourne derbies last season were goals galore, with Victory winning the first 6-0 while the other ended 3-2 to City.

KCC victory

Alex Chidiac was on the scoresheet in City's 3-2 win last season but will now line up for the opposite side, making the move to Melbourne Victory.

Kyra Cooney-Cross played her part in two of Victory's five goals last game, while Courtney Nevin made her debut for Victory playing the first half for her new side. 

Emma Checker lead from the back as City clinched a late winner against Canberra in their first game of the season. 

Both sides will be hoping to pick up back-to-back wins and claim bragging rights over their rivals. 

The last game of the round will see Adelaide United host Canberra United. 

Adelaide we're left shellshocked after Victory's performance last week and have a point to prove after just missing their first semi-finals berth last season. 

Canberra United are eager to pick up their first points of the season after going down late to City last Friday.
