Sensational Kerr takes out NWSL Player of the Week

Westfield Matildas skipper Sam Kerr is again the talk of the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) after taking out the competition’s Player of the Week award.

Kerr took out the accolade for her stunning hattrick in the Chicago Red Stars’ 3-2 win over Orlando Pride on the weekend in her first match back after the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

It’s already the third time this season Kerr has been voted the Player of the Week, while she also made the NWSL Team of the Month in May.

The Red Stars missed Kerr during her absence with the Westfield Matildas in France, losing all three matches without their star striker.

But she opened the scoring against Orlando in just the seventh minute before grabbing her second in first-half stoppage time.

Kerr then sealed her treble early in the second-half to set-up a vital win for Chicago.

The 25-year-old, who led the NWSL for goals over the last two seasons with 22 and 20 respectively, is again at the top of the charts despite missing nearly a month of action.

Kerr has nine goals for the campaign – seven in her last three outings – to sit four clear of Utah Royals striker Amy Rodriguez (five).

The Red Stars are next in action on Sunday morning (AEST) with a clash against Kerr’s former club Sky Blue FC.
