The final four: UWCL semi final preview

There are only four teams left in this year’s UEFA Women’s Champions League, with Sam Kerr the only remaining Australian.

Her Chelsea side will come up against Germany’s Bayern Munich, while the other semi final sees PSG and Barcelona do battle.

Chelsea and Bayern are both aiming to progress to their first ever UEFA Women’s Champions League final. They defeated Wolfsburg and Rosengard respectively. Both sides have also enjoyed great seasons domestically.

The German side sit top of the Frauen Bundesliga and went on a 26 game winning streak earlier in the season.

April has seen Bayern get knocked out of the DFB Pokal – Germany’s women’s cup competition – by Wolfsburg and lose for the first time in the league; a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Hoffenheim.

Chelsea also sit top of the FA WSL and took another step on the road to retaining the league title with a 2-2 draw over title rivals Manchester City.


The Blues are still alive in the FA Women’s Cup – recently defeating Championship side London City Lionesses - and took out the Conti Cup earlier in the year. Australian captain Kerr has contributed three goals to Chelsea’s Champions League campaign, one behind team mate Fran Kirby.

The winner of the Bayern Chelsea match will take on the victor of Barcelona v PSG.

The French side defeated the reigning champions, Olympique Lyon, in their quarter final, while Barcelona dispatched of Manchester City.


Barca have been running riot in the league, winning 24 straight games and scoring a whopping 125 goals in the league. The team is also in the quarter finals of the Cope de la Reina.

PSG has been strong in the French league as well. They have yet to lose, winning 16 of 17 games and scoring 71 goals.

The attacking prowess of both teams is clear, making defence a crucial part of this tie.

Chelsea travel to Bayern Munich at 1am Monday morning (Australian time), while Paris host Barcelona 11pm on Sunday night (Australian time). The second legs will take place on May 2nd.
