The Matildas learnt their Tokyo fate last night drawing the USA, Sweden, and New Zealand.
For Australian captain Sam Kerr, Group G will provide the playing group with more strong tests.
“I think it’s a tough group, obviously looking at it. But when you go to an Olympic Games and a World Cup, you want to play the best and beat the best so it’s a good challenge for us.” Kerr said.
Head coach Tony Gustavsson and the team are all very familiar with our opponents in the group and Kerr believes the draw allows the team to build into the tournament.

“I’m really excited about it. At the end of the day I think we’ve pulled the best draw out of the group. We play New Zealand first, [then] Sweden, if we get two wins there then we put ourselves in a good position going into the USA game.”

While a lot of the squad complete their seasons at club level in Europe, they will also be focused on Tokyo and how to best prepare for a major tournament.
“We’re just going to focus on the first game, and go from there. But we’ve had good success in tough groups at World Cups before so nothing we can’t achieve.”
