Aussies Abroad preview: Kerr’s Red Stars chasing first NWSL crown

Sam Kerr has the chance to complete a remarkable National Women’s Soccer League season when her Chicago Red Stars face North Carolina Courage in the Championship game on Monday morning (AEDT).

The Reds Stars have reached to NWSL final for the first time, with Kerr’s early goal in the Semi Final enough for them to beat Portland Thorns last weekend.

And the Westfield Matildas skipper, and all-time NWSL top goalscorer, will need to be at her devastating best if Chicago are to get their hands on the silverware.

The Courage, who won the NWSL Shield for a third straight year, are playing in their third straight NWSL Championship final and are the competition’s defending champions and powerhouse team.

But in Kerr, the Red Stars have a big-game player who is at the peak of her powers.

The 26-year-old was this week named the 2019 Players' Player of the Year by her National Women’s Soccer League peers.

It came after another record-breaking campaign that saw her win a third straight NWSL Golden Boot by scoring an all-time high 18 goals, breaking her own record of 17 in 2017.

Chicago are on the road for the decider, travelling to Sahlen's Stadium at WakeMed Soccer Park for the clash that kicks off at 6.30am AEDT on Monday.

There is cup football on the menu for Lisa De Vanna in Italy this weekend with the Women’s Super Cup to be played at 10.30pm on Sunday night (AEDT).

De Vanna, who has scored two goals since joining Fiorentina, will hope to add to that tally in the clash against Juventus.

In Germany, Emily Gielnik’s Bayern Munich will look to keep the heat on leaders Wolfsburg when they take on USV Jena in the Frauen-Bundesliga.

Bayern are currently third in Germany’s top-flight, six points off top spot and should have few problems against the league’s basement side at 12am on Monday (AEDT).

Jacynta Galabadaarachchi’s West Ham faced a tricky home clash against second-place Chelsea in the Women’s Super League in England.

The Hammers, who drew 2-2 with Tottenham Hotspur last time out, welcome the Blues to town at 2am on Monday (AEDT).

And Alex Chidiac and Atletico Madrid are gearing up for a big game away at Real Sociedad at 10pm on Sunday.

Third-place Atleti are just one point off the top of the ladder in Spain.
