Around the grounds: Raso makes young Portland fan’s day

Westfield Matildas star Hayley Raso has become a real fan-favourite during her time with National Women’s Soccer League side Portland Thorns in recent years.

And it’s not hard to see why.

The 24-year-old is in her fourth season with the Thorns and went above and beyond to put a smile on the face of a young fan who is doing it tough.

After meeting eight-year-old Rohen at a hospital visit in July, Raso immediately bonded with the youngster.

And she invited him to come out and watch the Thorns in action at a recent game at Providence Park.

The smile on Rohen’s face says it all.

Green sleeps under says in the name of charity

Sydney FC Westfield W-League championship-winner Ally Green has roughed it out this week, all for a very worthwhile cause.

Green, who has represented the Young Matildas, took part in The Chappell Foundation ‘Sports Star Sleepout’ at the SCG alongside athletes from various different codes.

The annual event is to raise funds and awareness for thousands of those less fortunate have to go through every night in Sydney.

“We were out for the night on the cold, dewy and wet grass. We were given a plastic sheet to put on the grass, and two cardboard sheets to lay on top of,” Green explained to Sydney FC’s official website.

“We then got served one cup of soup and a bread roll for dinner, trying to replicate the types of dinners most homeless get if they’re lucky.

“The experience was eye opening, definitely something no one should have to experience every night.”

Green has set herself the target of raising $3,000 and is well on her way already, with $1,800 raised ahead of the sleepout.
