Emily Gielnik's Aston Villa was aiming to make it three consecutive wins when they hosted Mackenzie Arnold's West Ham United. An injury sustained on international duty for the forward will see Gielnik sidelined for Villa, while Arnold started in goals for the Hammers.

Quick goals to skipper Dagný Brynjarsdóttir and Honoka Hayashi saw the visitors go into the break 2-0 up. Aston Villa had the chance the claw back a goal after a handball in the box, however, Arnold had other ideas, making penalty saves in back-to-back WSL games to deny her former teammate Alisha Lehmann from the spot.

Kenza Dali halved the deficit for Villa, but the home side was unable to complete the comeback. Three red cards in the game's final minutes, one to Hammers' defender Hawa Cissoko and the others to both coaches saw a wild end to the game.

Meanwhile, Clare Wheeler's Everton hosted Sam Kerr's Chelsea. Kerr made the start for the reigning champions, while Wheeler started on the bench for the first time in the WSL season.

Kerr found the back of the net early, but the offside flag denied the Aussie's second goal of the WSL season. The Blues would eventually open the scoring before the halftime break through Pernille Harder.

The Toffees found the equaliser after a scramble in the box resulted in an own goal. Not long after Harder had her second of the game, finishing from the penalty spot.

Wheeler made her WSL debut for Everton, coming off the bench in the 64th minute. A stoppage-time goal from Niamh Charles sealed all three points for Chelsea with a 3-1 win.

Next up, Alanna Kennedy, Hayley Raso and Mary Fowler's Manchester City aimed to secure their first victory of the WSL season when they hosted Leicester City.

Raso and Fowler started on the bench, while a shoulder injury to Kennedy saw her unavailable for the fixture. A goal to Khadija Shaw saw Manchester go into the break 1-0 up.

Three goals in the second half saw City record a 4-0 win, collecting their first win of the season.

Lastly, Caitlin Foord and Steph Catley's Arsenal continued their unbeaten start to the WSL season with a 1-0 win over Reading FC.

Foord and Catley both made the start for the Gunners, and it was the visitors who found the back of the net at the half-hour mark through Stina Blackstenius.

Arsenal moves to second on the ladder after the win, with Manchester United leapfrogging the Gunners with a better goal difference.

USA

Moving over to the USA, Chloe Logarzo's Kansas City Current booked their spot in the NWSL semi-finals after a 2-1 win over the Houston Dash.

Logarzo started on the bench for the visitors and it was her side that got off to the ideal start, with Lo'eau LaBonta firing Kansas in front from the spot in the fifth minute.

Dash found the equaliser before the breakthrough from Sophie Schmidt. A matchwinner in the 10th minute of second-half stoppage time from Kate Del Fava sealed the win for Kansas who now faces OL Reign next week in the semi-finals. Logarzo remained an unused substitute on the bench, still awaiting her first minutes for Kansas this season since returning from injury.

Emily van Egmond's Wave FC made their first appearance in the NWSL playoffs, hosting Chicago Red Stars. Van Egmond started for the home side, making her return from an injury that saw her miss the October FIFA international window with the CommBank Matildas.

Red Stars opened the scoring in the game after a defensive error, with Yūki Nagasato capitalising off a poor pass out from the back to send the visitors into the break 1-0 up.

Van Egmond was close to opening her account for Wave FC to net the equaliser, with her shot just wide. She redeemed herself a short time later, finding her first goal for San Diego in the 67th minute to send the game into extra time.

NWSL Golden Boot winner Alex Morgan would produce the matchwinner for the home side, with San Diego Wave booking their spot in the semi-finals.

France

Next up, Lydia Williams' Paris Saint-Germain recorded a 3-1 win over Dijon in their fifth game of the D1 season. Williams did not feature in the game or on the bench after picking up an ankle injury on international duty.

Elsewhere, Ellie Carpenter's Lyon sealed a 3-1 win over Bordeaux to increase their lead at the top of the table to two points.
