Van Egmond: "The spirits in the team are high"

CommBank Matildas midfielder Emily van Egmond gave her reaction in the aftermath of Australia’s 2-0 victory over Mexico in San Antonio, Texas.

“We were prepared for a couple of different situations,” she explained. “The first half they did come out quite aggressive [in the press] but we solved that, I thought, towards the end of the first half. And then [we've] come out in the second half and I thought we were quite comfortable, and that we would finish the game up pretty strong.”

This game was one of the final matches the team will play in preparation for the Olympic Football Tournament Paris 2024.

“For us, it’s just focusing on that first game going into Paris, and utilising all the windows that we have left the best way that we can,” she said.

“We’ve got two games now against China at home, which is good because it’s another challenge for us, and then the last window obviously before going into that Olympic tournament.

“On a personal note, I feel like I’m in a good place, I feel like I’m playing well. The spirits in the team are high. We have a few injuries but it gives other people an opportunity to come in and showcase how well they’ve been doing in clubland as well. Our depth is getting stronger and stronger and that’s obviously what you want.”

She praised the fans in San Antonio for creating a loud atmosphere that was enjoyable to play in front of.

“It was a good atmosphere,” she reflected. “There were obviously a lot of Mexican supporters here, which was cool for them. But we also had quite a few Aussies, which was really nice and pleasing to see. The girls love coming out every time we see green and gold in the stadium. The atmosphere was fun.”

The 30-year-old wasn’t surprised by the large Australian contingent in the crowd.

“Aussies love getting behind their own,” she said. “It was awesome to see that a lot of them made the trip out tonight and we’re thankful that they came out and supported us. It’s huge having that support so hopefully we can build on this performance.”

The San Diego Wave player finished by reiterating the laser focus that the team had on Olympic preparation.

“Ultimately, in the back of your mind as a professional athlete, you want to win and that’s what we’re all here to do,” she explained.

“But for us, it’s [about] focusing on that first game in the group stage, and prepping ourselves the best way we can.”
