Simon eyes Westfield Matildas return for China friendlies

She has a Westfield W-League Derby to look forward to this weekend but Kyah Simon already has one eye on a Westfield Matildas return in the upcoming friendlies against China.

Australia will host China in a two-game series in Victoria, with the first game at AAMI Park on Wednesday, 22 November and Simonds Stadium in Geelong four days later.

Surgery on both shoulders has meant Simon has missed the bulk of the Westfield Matildas matches in 2017 but she’s desperate to get back in Alen Stajcic’s squad to face China.

"Staj has kept a close eye on me throughout my rehab and been very supportive,” Simon said.

“I’m ensuring I give myself the best chance [to be in that squad].

“Now that I’m back playing [with Melbourne City], there's no doubt I want to be there playing with the girls and in front of my new home crowd in Victoria.”

Simon made a superb return to action in the Westfield W-League last Friday night, scoring City’s goal in their 4-1 loss to Perth Glory.

While disappointed with the result, the 26-year-old attacker was relieved to have made it through the match unscathed and hopes to build on that display before the China series.

"It was my first full game back since a double shoulder reconstruction earlier this year. I was pleased with how my body felt running out the 90 minutes and as a striker it's nice to get a goal," she said.

“I can only take positives after two major surgeries to come back, just doing what I love again, being out there with the girls and playing football.”
