Rookie Micah relishing opportunity in positive surroundings

It is very much a case of back to the future for Westfield Matildas rookie Teagan Micah this week when she undertakes her first full national team camp.

Micah has been named in Ante Milicic’s squad for the upcoming friendly against the United States, paving the way for a potential debut.

The 21-year-old may not yet be a regular on the international scene, but she will have a familiar face in Colorado in the shape of goalkeeping coach John Gorza, who has worked with her before.

“John was actually my very first goalkeeper coach when I was 11,” Micah revealed to matildas.com.au.

“He’s had me for a while and we’ve had a really good relationship and I know he’s a very talented coach so I’m very proud of him for getting this opportunity as well to get called up so I just have to put in the work now.”

Micah has taken an unorthodox route to the national team, making her debut in the Westfield W-League for Brisbane Roar before attending the University of California, Los Angeles.

Her performances for the UCLA Bruins caught the eye of the Westfield Matildas coaching staff, leading to a call-up.

Micah said she was enjoying the experience as the squad ramps up preparations ahead of Friday's matchup with the USA (kick-off 12.30pm AEDT).

“It was a great session actually, the girls put in a lot of hard work,” Micah said.

“It was short and sharp, obviously we are trying to get used to the altitude at the moment so it’s been really good.

“Very intense, I found the environment to be really positive and all the girls are very friendly, super willing to get to know me, so it’s been really good.”
