Matildas Abroad: Raso’s Everton march into Women’s FA Cup final

Hayley Raso’s Everton have qualified for their first FA Cup final in six years after they saw off Birmingham City 3-0 on Thursday morning.

Raso will become the first Aussie to feature in the Women’s FA Cup final when her Everton go head to head against Manchester City in the showcase event on 1 November.

Everton proved far too strong for Birmingham City with the Merseyside club always looking like they were in control of the semi-final clash.

Simone Magill opened the scoring on the stroke of half-time before Nicoline Sorensen doubled the Toffees’ lead on the hour mark.

Raso entered the action shortly after her side went 2-0 up and was a part of the celebrations when Valerie Gauvin fired home their third and final goal of the evening in the 87th minute.

The Matildas winger had a special message for the fans on the morning after their well-earned victory.

“We’re back at training today after a big win in our semi-final game last night. We’re looking forward to Wembley for the FA Cup final,” Raso said.

“The girls showed so much character and belief. It’s just such a special club to be a part of. This is why we play football and we can’t wait to get out there and play at Wembley.”

Their opponents for the Wembley showpiece was decided overnight as Manchester City booked their spot thanks to a 2-1 win against Caitlin Foord’s Arsenal.

Foord played the full game up front for the Gunners as they fell to a disappoint defeat away to City.

Steph Houghton’s free kick put City ahead on 19 minutes before Jordan Nobbs levelled with a stunning long range strike.

It took just three minutes for the hosts to regain their lead as Sam Mewis put them 2-1 up in the 41st minute.

A resolute second half from Manchester saw them hold onto their advantage as they sealed their place in the upcoming final.
