Rare treat as CommBank Matildas face USWNT in Australia

When the two-game series against the US Women’s National Team was announced, Commonwealth Bank Matildas fans were naturally excited.

It was another opportunity to see the girls in green and gold on home soil. After the joy, goals, and colour of the two-game series against Brazil, fans were more than ready for another chance to watch the Australians in their own backyard.

But there was also excitement about the opponent, and more specifically, seeing the US in Australia.

Getting to watch the two-time reigning FIFA Women’s World Cup champions on Australian shores is a rarity.

In fact, you only need one hand to count the number of matches played between the Commonwealth Bank Matildas and the United States in Australia.

It’s been a long time since the US has been Down Under as well; their last game against Australia in Australia was in 2000.

The USWNT have taken on the Commonwealth Bank Matildas in Newcastle before where they won 1-0 at the Pacific Cup in 2000. They have also travelled to Adelaide for the 2000 edition of the Australia Cup.

And back in 1997, Australia and the US competed for the Ram Sports Cup playing in Canberra, Melbourne, and Bathurst.

These teams have been doing battle since the World Invitation Tournament in Taipei City in 1987. In the 34 years since, they’ve played multiple friendlies and minor cup competitions and tournaments.

During the 34 years these teams have played across the United States from Seattle to Tampa, and Hartford to Los Angeles.

Seattle is the city most Australian fans will remember fondly as it was the setting for the Commonwealth Bank Matildas’ lone victory over the USWNT.

Back in 2017 during the Tournament of Nations, Tameka Yallop – then Butt – scored the single goal which helped Australia defeat the US for the first time ever.

They’ve also locked horns on the biggest stages. Australia and the US have been drawn in the same FIFA Women’s World Cup group twice – in 1995 and 2015 – as well as met at two Olympics Games.

Fans will remember all too well the recent battles in Kashima at Tokyo 2020.

The sides ground out a 0-0 draw in the group stage before a 4-3 goal fest that ultimately ended in disappointment for Australia in the bronze medal match.

There is plenty of familiarity between these teams. The US is Australia’s third-most frequent opponent with this two-game friendly series representing games 32 and 33 in their history.

The Commonwealth Bank Matildas have only played more games against New Zealand (48) and China (42).

In November, fans will once again get to see some of the best players in the world in Australia and have the chance to break records ahead of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
