Friends turn to foes again as CommBank Matildas and USWNT do battle

For the third and fourth time this year, the Commonwealth Bank Matildas and the US Women's National Team will do battle.

After a 0-0 draw in the group stage at Tokyo 2020 and 4-3 defeat in the bronze medal match, these two sides are set to add two new cracking contests to their catalogue of clashes.

Beyond the frequency of matches this year, these two sides know each other very well.

There's the connection between Commonwealth Bank Matildas head coach Tony Gustavsson and his former side.

Gustavsson knows these USWNT players very well and enjoyed plenty of success with them while he was an assistant coach.

There's also the long standing connection between the National Women's Soccer League and the A-League Women - with players from both countries plying their trade in both leagues.

It's an attachment that continues with Chloe Logarzo playing for Kansas City Current before her ACL injury and Emily van Egmond returning to Orland Pride to see out the 2021 season.

While playing in purple, van Egmond, as well as the likes of Alanna Kennedy and Steph Catley have played with Alex Morgan.

Catley and Lydia Williams also spent time in Seattle, Washington with the now OL Reign.

Portland had a whole host of Australians with Caitlin Foord, Hayley Raso, and Ellie Carpenter all playing in Rose City before plying their trades in Europe, while Kyah Simon played for the Houston Dash before heading to Tottenham Hotspur.https://account.footballnetwork.com.au/

Sam Kerr is in NWSL folklore, bagging golden boot awards left, right, and centre.

All of these players have done battle with and alongside national team players from the United States. Some USWNT players have also made a mark on Australian shores.

American centre back Abby Dahlkemper spent the 2015-16 season with Adelaide United. Emily Sonnett was a Sky Blue for the 2017-18 campaign.

Even Kristie Mewis and Megan Rapinoe made appearances in the W-League for Canberra United and Sydney FC respectively.

Even beyond Australia and the United States, Aussies and Americans work together. Chief among them are Lyon team mates Ellie Carpenter and Catarina Macario.

All of this familiarity is sure to breed fascinating contests. And recent history shows that goals are all but guaranteed.
