Matildas Abroad: UWCL quarter-finals begin for Arsenal and Lyon

The UEFA Women's Champions League quarter-finals first leg kicks off for our Matildas Abroad on Thursday morning. Lyon takes on the Italian side Juventus; while the Gunners host German outfit VfL Wolfsburg.

The road to the final in Turin continues, with eight teams facing off in a home and away tie to see which teams will qualify for the semi-finals.

A three-month break since the end of the group stage has given teams time to focus on their quarter-finals opponents, with Lyon and Arsenal taking on some all too familiar teams.

Games will be shown live and free on the DAZN YouTube page.

Ellie Carpenter's Lyon takes on fellow Aussie Joe Montemurro's Juventus side. Juve caused the biggest upset of the UWCL group stage when they finished above last year's runners-up Chelsea, knocking them out of the competition and keeping the dream to play a home UWCL final in Turin alive.

The Italian champions have never previously made it past the round of 32 stages, being knocked out last season by their quarter-final opponent Lyon.

Both sides only recorded one loss in the group stage, Lyon going down 1-0 to Bayern Munich while Juventus faced a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Chelsea.

Lyon's side has some injury worries heading into the tie, with first-choice goalkeeper Christiane Endler still out with injury, however, keeper Sarah Bouhaddi, alongside Dzsenifer Marozsán and Eugénie Le Sommer, has returned from loans to NWSL side OL Reign.

Juventus, playing in their first UWCL quarter-finals, look like a strong side with the potential to test Lyon. Last season's round of 32 first leg, saw Juve leading Lyon 2-1 for half an hour before a late turnaround by the visitors to win 3-2.

This game will kick off on Thursday morning at 4:45 am AEDT.

Back in London, WSL ladder leaders Arsenal host German side VfL Wolfsburg. Both sides are previous winners of the illustrious trophy, the Gunners winning it in the 2006-07 season, while Wolfsburg last lifted the trophy in the 2013-14 season.

This quarter-final sees both teams make history, Wolfsburg into a record tenth straight quarter-final and the Gunners are the first to feature 14 times overall in the last eight.

Wolfsburg will have some all too familiar faces for our Aussie trio of Caitlin Foord, Steph Catley and Lydia Williams, with Netherlands international Jill Roord making the switch in the off-season for the Gunners to Wolfsburg green. While Dominique Janssen also made the move after the 2018-19 season.

Foord and Catley both found the back of the net in Arsenal's group stage run, where they collected three wins and three losses. Arsenal's group featured reigning champions FC Barcelona, as well as newcomers HB Køge and TSG 1899 Hoffenheim, with the latter handing them a 4-1 loss in their final group stage game which saw Arsenal scrape through to the quarter-finals on goal difference alone.

Since that loss back in December, the Gunners have revamped their attacking strike power, signing BK Häcken striker Stina Blackstenius, who scored one goal for Häcken during their group stage run.

In recent weeks the Gunners have shown fine form across all competitions, defeated once in the WSL and through to the Women's FA Cup semi-finals. However, they will have the work cut out for them in the home and away leg against a side that has claimed the UWCL trophy two times, and been to the final a total of five times.

The first leg of the game will be held at the iconic Emirates Stadium.

This game will kick off on Thursday morning at 7:00 am AEDT.
