England

Kicking off in Birmingham, Emily Gielnik's Aston Villa kicked off the new year with a 2-1 win over Kyah Simon's Spurs.

The visitors took less than half an hour to score, with new signing Beth England netting the opener for Spurs, ending their four-game goalless drought in the WSL.

Villa responded quickly finding the equaliser through Kenza Dali before Rachel Daly added a second just four minutes later to give the home side a 2-1 lead going into the break.

Gielnik came off the bench in the 75th minute, replacing new signing Jordan Nobbs in Carla Ward's side to help see out the win.

Meanwhile, a top-of-the-table clash was locked in when Steph Catley and Caitlin Foord's Arsenal hosted Sam Kerr's Chelsea with all three starting at Emirates Stadium.

Both sides had chances to open the scoring in the first half but were forced into the break in the North West London derby at a deadlock.

Arsenal had the perfect opportunity to open the scoring after Niamh Charles bought down Foord in the box, with skipper Kim Little making no mistake from the spot to put the Gunners 1-0 up.

Foord tested Zećira Mušović in goals but was unable to double her side's advantage. Chelsea on the cusp of letting go of the top spot on the table clawed back the equaliser, with Kerr heading in her first of the year in the 89th minute to end the game 1-1.

Meanwhile, Clare Wheeler's Everton recorded a 3-2 win over Reading, marking their fifth win of the season that sees them move into fifth place.

Katja Snoeijs and Jess Park found the back of the net in the first half to put the Toffees up 2-0 going into the break. Reading clawed a goal back through Justine Vanhaevermaet before Gabriele George restored Everton's two-goal lead. Deanna Cooper scored for Reading eight minutes later but was unable to net a third to take away one point.

Wheeler came off the bench in the 87th minute for the home side.

Remy Siemsen's Leicester City recorded their first win of the WSL season with a 3-0 win over Brighton. Aileen Whelan scored right before the break for the Foxes.

Leicester started the second half how they finished off the first, scoring two more goals to collect their first three points of the season in a 3-0 victory.

Siemsen did not feature in the matchday squad for her new side.

Lastly, Mackenzie Arnold's West Ham United hosted Mary Fowler, Hayley Raso and Alanna Kennedy's Manchester City.

Arnold and Kennedy were both named in the starting XI for their respective sides and were in the thick of the action early, with a set piece almost seeing Kennedy open the scoring if it had not been for Arnold's save.

City opened the scoring minutes into the second half, with Khadija Shaw rounding the keeper to net her ninth WSL goal of the season.

Gareth Taylor's side hang on for a 1-0 victory, extending their unbeaten run to 11 games in all competitions with Kennedy named Player of the Match in the win.

Fowler remained an unused substitute on the bench while Raso did not appear in the matchday squad.

France

Our final stop takes us to France, where Lydia Williams' Paris Saint-Germain recorded a narrow 1-0 win over Rodez AF.

Kadidiatou Diani found the matchwinner from the spot just before the break to give PSG the lead. Jackie Groenen made a bursting run into the box and was bought down by the keeper, with Diani converting the penalty. Williams did not feature in the matchday squad.

Ellie Carpenter's Lyon recorded a 3-0 win over ASJ Soyaux Charente to stay in touch with PSG at the top of the table.

Goals to Vanessa Gilles, Amandine Henry and Wendie Renard gave Lyon all three points in the encounter. Carpenter is still progressing from her ACL injury and finds herself back training with the side.
