Matildas Abroad Review: Luik and Yallop find the back of the net; Chelsea claims third place at Women's ICC

Kicking off in the USA, Chloe Logarzo's Kansas City Current extended their unbeaten run to 11 games with a 1-1 draw against Angel City. 

Angel City's first shot on goal of the game delivered the opener through Cari Roccaro, before Lo’eau LaBonta equalised from the spot. Kansas now move to fourth on the ladder. 

Emily van Egmond's San Diego Wave FC bounced back from back-to-back losses with a 3-1 win over the Houston Dash. 

Dash found the opener just seven minutes into the game, with Ebony Salmon scoring her eighth goal of the season. Alex Morgan found the equaliser minutes later to send the game into halftime at 1-1.


Amirah Ali and Sofia Jakobsson found the back of the net in the second half to seal the win, moving Wave FC to second on the ladder. 

Alex Chidiac's Racing Louisville went down 2-1 in the 'The Women's Cup', with OL Reign claiming the second edition of the cup. Chidiac came off the bench in the 58th minute but was unable to help Racing claw back the equaliser.

Melbourne to host blockbuster as CommBank Matildas welcome Olympic silver medallists Sweden

Meanwhile, Sam Kerr's Chelsea claimed third place in the Women's International Champions Cup, narrowly beating the Portland Thorns 1-0, with Gureo Reiten scoring a 64th-minute match-winner for Emma Hayes' side. 


Kerr started once again for the Blues, almost scoring a second for Chelsea minutes after Reiten's opener, with her attempt hitting the woodwork. 

Moving over to Sweden, Aivi Luik scored her first competitive goal for BK Häcken in their dominant 6-0 win over KIF Örebro DFF in their return to the season. 


Hanna Wijk gave Häcken an early lead before Luik doubled their advantage when she headed in a corner in the seventh minute. 

Meanwhile, Teagan Micah's FC Rosengård went down 2-1 to Piteå, dropping to second place on the ladder for the first time this season.

Micah remained on the bench in Rosengård's first loss of the season. 

Remy Siemsen's AIK sealed a much-needed point when they drew 0-0 with Umeå IK. 

Siemsen had an attempt in the opening 10 minutes to find the opener, firing her shot just wide of the target. 

MAT v CAN SYD Match Annoucement


Over in the Stockholm Derby, Elise Kellond-Knight, Kyra Cooney-Cross and Courtney Nevin's Hammarby beat Djurgårdens IF 3-0 in the Derby.

The Australian trio all started for Hammarby, with the hosts finding the back of the net just seven minutes into the game through Vilde Hasund.

Madelen Janogy found the back of the net twice in the second half to seal all three points in the 3-0 win.

Cooney-Cross was named Player of the Match as she made her derby debut, CommBank Matildas' head coach Tony Gustavsson and Strength and Conditioning Coach Jack Sharkey were at the match, and caught up with the Aussie trio following the win. 

Over in the UWCL, Tameka Yallop found the back of the net as SK Brann Kvinner booked their spot in the next round of qualifying after beating ŽFK Spartak Subotica 3-1.

Yallop made the start for Brann and snuck through at the back post to find the second goal for the Norwegian side in the 25th minute. 


Manchester City faced defeat in their UEFA Women’s Champions League qualifying, going down 1-0 to Real Madrid.

For the second UWCL season in a row, Madrid knocked Manchester out of qualifying for the group stage, with Caroline Weir coming back to haunt her former club. 

Mary Fowler played the full 90-minute game; while Hayley Raso replaced an injured Chloe Kelly at the 50th-minute mark. Alanna Kennedy remained an unused substitute on the bench.
