CommBank Matildas stars return for Canada clashes
Several of the CommBank Matildas’ established stars will return to international action later this month as head coach Tony Gustavsson named the 23-player squad to take on reigning Olympic Gold medallists, Canada, in Brisbane and Sydney.
Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium and Sydney’s Allianz Stadium will be the host venues for the two internationals on 3 September and 6 September, respectively. Both stadiums will also feature the CommBank Matildas in the group phase of next year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia and New Zealand™.
With the August/September FIFA International Window signifying the commencement of Australia’s final phase of preparation for next year’s global tournament, a multitude of CommBank Matildas’ stalwarts including captain Sam Kerr, vice-captain Steph Catley, forward Caitlin Foord and defender Alanna Kennedy, just to name a few, will be back in Australian colours next month.
“Following the recent One Year to Go celebrations and the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023™ draw just around the corner, there is an excitement around the group of players selected about the next 11 months of our work together ahead of a home tournament,” Gustavsson said.
"The recent continental championships in Africa, North and South America and Europe highlight the quality of women’s football globally and put into sharp focus the need to maximise every opportunity we have to continue to progress as team.”
"We are thrilled to welcome back a number of fantastic players for this window, adding to returning members from our last camp in Europe, as we prepare to take on a team of undeniable quality in Canada."
September will also mark the homecoming of midfielder Chloe Logarzo who rejoins the squad after recovering from an ACL injury sustained almost 12 months ago. Meanwhile, forward Kyah Simon will continue her return to the pitch from an ankle injury in her club environment.
Canada will hit Australian shores following a silver medal winning campaign at the 2022 CONCACAF W Championship where they secured their place at the FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia and New Zealand 2023™.
Following the conclusion of their club commitments in Europe and the United States, members of the CommBank Matildas squad will commence their journey to Australia on Monday, 29 August to commence preparations for the two-match series.
Australia’s fixtures with Canada will be broadcast live and free on Network 10 and simulcast on 10 Play and Paramount+.
The first match of the CommBank Matildas v Canada 2022 series is proudly supported by the Queensland Government, through Tourism and Events Queensland, and features on the It’s Live! in Queensland events calendar.
