Sam Kerr netted a brace in an emphatic win for Chelsea, while Emily van Egmond made her debut for San Diego Wave FC in their first-ever home NWSL game.

The season kicked off in Denmark and Sweden, while Chelsea went to the top of the FA WSL table with a 9-0 win over Leicester City.

Starting off in England, Emily Gielnik made the start for Aston Villa as they were looking to break their three-game unbeaten streak.

Villa and Reading went into the break, unable to be split, despite the best efforts from Gielnik and her side. The Royals broke the deadlock from the spot, with  Justine Vanhaevermaet cooly slotting the visitors into the lead.

The hosts would eventually find the equaliser, a bullet header from Ramona Petzelberger on the back post sealed the 1-1 draw.

Alanna Kennedy and Hayley Raso's Manchester City game was postponed at the last minute after positive COVID-19 cases in the Birmingham City camp.

Sam Kerr's Chelsea had no problem finding the back of the net, recording a 9-0 thrashing of Leicester City. The scoring was underway only three minutes into the game, with Guro Reiten finding the back of the net; Kerr found her first of the evening just one minute after to double the Blues' lead.

A double to Beth England, one of which Kerr assisted, another for Reiten and a first WSL goal for defender Aniek Nouwen had the defending champions leading 6-0 at the break.

Kerr added the seventh soon after the break. Lauren James entered the fold and scored her first goal for Chelsea after making a move from Manchester United in the off-season. Jessie Fleming rounded out the scoring to finish the game 9-0.

This win sends Chelsea to the top of the WSL table, one point in front of Arsenal.

Mackenzie Arnold and Tameka Yallop's West Ham United rounded out the WSL action, hosting Brighton & Hove Albion.

Arnold and Yallop made the start for the Hammers; however, it would be the Seagulls that would draw first blood, Aileen Whelan capitalising off a poor clearance to finish past Arnold.

Inessa Kaagman scored in consecutive WSL games against West Ham, finishing off the scoring for Brighton in the 81st minute.

Over in America, Emily van Egmond's San Diego Wave FC played in their first-ever NWSL home game, hosting the Portland Thorns.

Thorns scored early, with Sophia Smith finding the winner in just the 5th minute.

Van Egmond came on to make her debut for San Diego, being subbed on after the half-time interval.

The midfielder was in the thick of the action early but could not help Wave find an equaliser.

Moving over to Scandinavia, Fortuna Hjørring kicked off their Danish Women's League against FC Nordsjælland.

Clare Wheeler and Angie Beard made the start for Fortuna; despite a flurry of chances for the side in green, they were forced into the break at a deadlock.

Olivia Holdt would fashion the opener just after the half-time break, with Camilla Kur Larsen adding the second not long after to win the game 2-0.

In Sweden, Clare Polkinghorne's Vittsjö GIK started their Damallsvenskan campaign against Linköpings FC.

Polkinghorne made the start; however, it would be the home side of Linköpings FC that would score first.

A second yellow card to Nellie Persson had Vittsjö down to 10, but they showed their grit and determination that flourished last season, finding the equaliser through Linda Sällström to finish the game 1-1.

Our last stop takes us to Norway as Karly Roestbakken's LSK Kvinner take on last-placed Avaldsnes IL.

Roestbakken did not feature in the matchday squad, but her team got the win in her absence. Beating Avaldsnes 2-0 and making it back-to-back wins.
