Westfield Matildas duo claim honours at Melbourne City’s Awards

Westfield Matildas duo Ellie Carpenter and Emily van Egmond have been recognised for outstanding seasons in the Westfield W-League with Champions Melbourne City.

Carpenter capped a dream first season at City by taking out the club’s Westfield W-League 2019/20 Season Player of the Year award.

The Westfield Matildas right-back was crowned City’s best on Tuesday night after playing a key role in the club’s double-winning side.

Carpenter made the switch from Canberra United to City at the start of the campaign, going on to play all 14 games as Rado Vidosic’s side went through undefeated.

Still just 19, Carpenter showed her undoubted class as she converted to a wing-back role under Vidosic, scoring two goals and providing four assists.

Her tireless displays down the right flank also saw her create 31 chances through the season, while she was also a vital contributor in City’s stingy defence.

Veteran goalkeeper Melissa Barbieri was presented the 2020 Coaches Award for her contribution to the club both on and off the field, while Egmond took out the Golden Boot for her six goals in 12 games.
