Aussies Abroad: Kerr breaks her own NWSL scoring record

Sam Kerr broke her own goalscoring record on Sunday morning AEST, scoring her 17th and 18th goals of the National Women's Soccer League campaign.

The Westfield Matildas star had held the previous mark for most goals in a season - the 17 she scored for Sky Blue FC in 2017, a year in which she also clinched the league's Most Valuable Player award.

Kerr's double helped Chicago Red Stars seal a 3-1 win over Washington Spirit, a result that seals a playoffs berth for the team from Illinois.

She opened the scoring with a delightful lob over Washington 'keeper Aubrey Bledsoe in the ninth minute and added another early in the second half with a powerful near post drive.

Kerr also set up Yuki Nagasato for Chicago's second goal, taking her season tally to 18 goals and five assists in 20 matches.

Westfield Matildas teammate Chloe Logarzo started for Washington and missed a 32nd minute penalty. Amy Harrison was an unused substitute.

Elsewhere in the States, Ellie Carpenter and Hayley Raso started for Portland Thorns in the club's 1-0 victory over Houston Dash.

Tobin Heath's 48th minute strike proved the match winner. Carpenter and Raso were withdrawn late on, while Caitlin Foord made an 87th minute substitute appearance.

Fit-again Lydia Williams was named on the bench for Reign FC, but that was one of the few positives for the Seattle-based club to take from their 1-0 to Sky Blue.

Steph Catley played 90 minutes for Reign, who missed the chance to move into the top four with the loss.

In the Norwegian Toppserien, Aivi Luik completed 90 minutes in a 2-0 win over Avaldsnes against Arna-Bjornar.

Fellow Westfield Matilda Tameka Yallop also played the full match of Klepp's 2-1 defeat to Lyn.
