Aussies Abroad: Kerr scores again as Chicago suffer shock loss

Sam Kerr’s 13th goal of the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) season wasn’t enough to stop Chicago Red Stars slumping to a shock loss on Thursday.

Up against Kerr’s former club Sky Blue FC, the Red Stars had the chance to go to the top of the NWSL with a win over the lowly home side in New Jersey.

But things didn’t go to plan for the Westfield Matildas skipper’s side who lost 2-1 after youngster Paige Monaghan scored a double for Sky Blue.

All the goals came in a thrilling second half and two of those in stoppage-time in a pulsating end to the contest at Yurcak Field.

With her side trailing 1-0 in injury-time, Kerr looked to have rescued a point for Chicago when she blasted in a loose ball from close range.

The 26-year-old, who has won the NWSL Golden Boot for the last two years – now has a five-goal lead at the top of the scoring charts from North Carolina’s Kristen Hamilton.

But less than two minutes after Kerr’s strike, Monaghan completed her brace – and a stunning upset – with a sensational strike from outside the box.

Kerr’s Westfield Matildas teammate MacKenzie Arnold was an unused substitute for the Red Stars.

Chicago, who remain in second spot after 17 matches, don’t play in the NWSL this weekend with their next clash at home against Orlando Pride next Thursday (AEST).
