Kerr double lights up Westfield Matildas win over Chile in front of record-breaking crowd

Sam Kerr scored her 39th and 40th goals for club and country in 2019 as the Westfield Matildas beat Chile 2-1 in Saturday's international friendly at Bankwest Stadium.

The Australian captain broke the deadlock after just three minutes and sealed her brace midway through the second half to lead the Westfield Matildas to victory in the team's first game since the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup.

It was also the Westfield Matildas first fixture on home soil since the Cup of Nations tournament played across February and March, and a sea of green and gold descended on Parramatta to welcome Australia home.

Over 20,000 fans packed into Bankwest Stadium for the clash with the South American side, eclipsing the record of 16,829 set in 2017 when Australia beat Brazil in Newcastle.

Those supporters did not have to wait long to celebrate Kerr finding the back of the net with her 10th international goal of 2019.

Kerr volleyed home at the back post after Chile failed to clear their lines from Emily van Egmond's delivery.

Australia had chances to double the advantage in the first half but ran into a goalkeeper on top of her game in Chile's Christiane Endler.

Endler twice flew off her line to dive at the feet of Hayley Raso, while Kerr misjudged her kick after a lovely ball in from Carpenter that gave the Australian captain a great chance at the near post.

Kerr did find the net again on 72 minutes, firing underneath Endler after she was sent clear on goal by Caitlin Foord.

Camila Sáez scored a late consolation for Chile, heading home from Francisca Lara's corner.

Kerr gives Australia the lead

It didn't take long for Australia's golden girl to strike.

Sam Kerr notched her 10th international of 2019 to open the scoring, lashing home on the volley after Chile failed to clear Emily van Egmond's set-piece delivery.

Chances for Australia

Australia had chances to assert their authority after Kerr's third minute opener.

The skipper should've capitalised at the near post after a great cross from Ellie Carpenter, while Endler was out quickly to smother a chance to Hayley Raso after she was played into the box by Chloe Logarzo.

Kerr secures brace

Make that 40 goals in 40 games for club and country during 2019 for Kerr.

Kerr raced onto Caitlin Foord's ball over the Chile back-line and fired underneath Endler to seal a double.
