Originally hailing from the ‘Sunshine State’ of Queensland, Kyra has become a key member of the Matildas midfield despite only being 21 years old.

She made her debut in the A-League Women’s with Melbourne Victory when she was only 15 years old, before joining the Western Sydney Wanderers on a move up the coast and scoring in her first game for the team from a free-kick against Adelaide United.

When Cooney-Cross bounced back to the Victory for the 2020/21 season, she scored the game-winning goal of the Grand Final, an Olimpico in the 120th minute that saw her side defeat Sydney FC 1-0.

Following a second championship with Victory in the 2021/22 season, Cooney-Cross secured her first overseas contract and signed with Damallsvenskan side Hammarby IF in Sweden, where she has become a regular starter and fan favourite.

She became part of a historic moment for the club when winning the Swedish Cup against rivals BK Hacken for the first time in 28 years in front of a record-breaking crowd of over 17,000 fans.

Now a familiar name amongst Matildas fans with 27 caps to it too, Cooney-Cross will be aiming to play at her third major tournament in this year's Women’s World Cup, after having appeared at the 2020 Olympic games in Tokyo and the 2022 AFC Women’s Asian Cup in India.
