Steph Catley returns for Melbourne City

Melbourne City captain Steph Catley will be returning for the Westfield W-League 2019/20 campaign.

The 25-year-old comes back to Australia following her second season with National Women’s Soccer League side Reign FC, where she played 16 games as the Seattle-based club finished fourth and qualified for the Playoffs in 2019.

The 75-cap Westfield Matilda played a key role as City won three straight Westfield W-League Championships between 2016 and 2018, the latter two of which she lifted the trophy as captain.

After going from triple champions to missing out on the Westfield W-League Finals Series in 2018/19, Catley is determined to help City rise back to the top.

“I’m extremely pleased to return to Melbourne City for another season,” Catley said.

“We’ve assembled a really strong squad for the upcoming season, and as a team, we’re determined to return to playing finals football.

“I’m proud to wear the captain’s armband for another year and I believe that we can achieve something special this season.”

Catley joins the City ranks alongside fellow Westfield Matildas Lydia Williams and Kyah Simon, and new recruits Ellie Carpenter, Emma Checker and Emily van Egmond.

Head coach Rado Vidosic said: “Steph is a world-class fullback, with a winning mentality and a strong drive to succeed.

“Her distribution is up there with the best in the league, as is her ability to work tirelessly on the wings to assist both in defence and attack.”
