BBC World Service has today announced the shortlist for the BBC Women’s Footballer of the Year 2021 award and voting is now open. The 2021 shortlisted footballers are:

  • Caroline Graham Hansen – Barcelona and Norway
  • Sam Kerr – Chelsea and Australia
  • Ashley Lawrence – Paris St Germain and Canada
  • Vivianne Miedema – Arsenal and Netherlands
  • Alexia Putellas – Barcelona and Spain

Mary Hockaday, Controller of BBC World Service English, said: “The popularity of women’s football continues to grow across the globe, and these five shortlisted players as well as their fellow professionals are role models for millions around the world."

"The BBC Women’s Footballer of the Year award is now in its seventh year, and as we look to the European Championships next year I’m delighted to once again celebrate the skill and dedication of these incredible women.”

The shortlist was announced during BBC World Service’s programme Newsday this morning (Thursday 28 October 2021) at 0600 BST (0500 GMT), and voting is now open. The vote will close at 0900 GMT on Monday 8 November 2021 and the winner of the BBC Women’s Footballer of the year 2021 will be crowned on Newsday on Monday 29 November at 0600 GMT.

The shortlist was selected by a large panel of experts involved in the game from all around the world, including coaches, players, administrators and journalists. Previous winners of the award include English footballer Lucy Bronze and Norwegian footballer Ada Hegerberg.

“It’s a huge honour to be nominated against so many other great names. For me these awards are really important, to recognise players for what they’ve done and the commitment they’ve given to the game but then also to let the fans have a say and make them feel a part of the game." Kerr said

"As a footballer you’re probably never happy, so I think it was a positive year but I think we can grow more. It was obviously my first full season at the club, and now that I’ve got a taste for winning trophies I want more.”
