Roestbakken describes 'unbelievable feeling' of Matildas debut

It may have only lasted 95 seconds but Karly Roestbakken’s Matildas debut will live long in her memory.

With Australia defending a 3-2 lead following their heroic fightback against Brazil, the 18-year-old replaced goalscorer Caitlin Foord as the clock ticked past 94 minutes.

After 95 minutes and 38 seconds, Swiss referee Esther Staubli blew the final whistle and the Miracle of Montpellier was complete.

Goals from Foord, Chloe Logarzo and an own goal from Brazilian defender Monica sparked jubilant scenes on the Stade de la Mosson pitch.

And the fact that Roestbakken touched the ball only six times did not matter one iota.

“It was an unbelievable feeling.”

“It’s always been my goal to play for the Matildas,” Roestbakken said.

“Some minutes, a minute, in that game — in such an amazing game against Brazil — it’s an unreal feeling.

“To get that win against Brazil, that’s what we really needed and now we just focus on Jamaica.”

Roestbakken was sent on to provide fresh legs and an extra defensive body as Australia locked up their first win of FIFA Women’s World Cup France 2019™ , but she has played an array of different positions in the Westfield W-League for Canberra United.

Wherever she is deployed by coach Ante Milicic, Roestbakken is hungry for more minutes in a Matildas jersey.

“Where the coach puts me, I’m happy to go anywhere. I do love playing full-back but wherever, I’m fine,” she added.

“I’m hoping to get a few more minutes at training to show [coach Milicic] that I can put my best foot forward to try and get on the pitch.

“Nothing is certain yet, but if I work hard, hopefully I do play again.”
