Who will the Westfield Young Matildas face on the road to the 2019 AFC U-19 Women’s Championship?

The Westfield Young Matildas will be out to secure their place at the 2019 AFC U-19 Women’s Championship when the second round of qualifying kicks off in Myanmar on Friday 26 April (AEST).

Head coach Gary van Egmond's side enter the second round in strong form, having scored 23 unanswered goals in October's first phase, when the team came up against Mongolia, Lebanon and Hong Kong.

Australia have been placed in Group A for the second phase alongside Nepal, Myanmar and Uzbekistan.

The Westfield Young Matildas need to finish first or second in order to join Thailand, Japan, DPR Korea, China PR and other yet-to-be-determined nations at the eight-team 2019 AFC U-19 Women’s Championship, contested in October and November this year. 

The top three nations at the 2019 AFC U-19 Women’s Championship will advance to the 2020 FIFA U-20s Women’s World Cup.

Australia's Group A opponents

Australia commence their campaign against Nepal on April 26, a side that last qualified for the AFC U-19 Women’s Championship back in 2004 and finished second in Group B.

They began their first round of qualification with a 3-0 loss to Thailand before bouncing back with a 2-0 win over India and a thumping 9-0 victory against Pakistan.

Next up are hosts Myanmar on April 28, who last qualified for the AFC U-19 Women’s Championship in 2013. 

Myanmar finished second in Group F, qualifying for the the second phase on goal difference in front of Laos and behind group winners Iran. 

Finally, on April 30, Australia will face Uzbekistan. The Uzbeks have featured at the last two AFC U-19 Women’s Championships (2017 and 2019) and topped Group C in the first round, scoring 34 goals and conceding just twice.
