Nevin hopes Hammarby move helps cement spot in national team

CommBank Matilda Courtney Nevin has recently made the biggest move of her career, joining Swedish club Hammarby.

After a championship-winning season with Melbourne Victory in the A-League Women and consistent performances in the green and gold, it was no wonder Hammarby took an interest in the youngster.

"Hammarby had their eye on me for a while and reached out saying they were interested in having me join the club," the 20-year-old said.

Moving to Sweden is Nevin's first stint overseas, but one she says has already been well worth it.

"The Damallsvenskan is a very strong league, so I knew making this move would help me develop and grow as a footballer. I feel the team is building something special and I wanted to be a part of it and it’s been great so far.

"The team environment is very professional, everyone works hard, they fight for the club and do everything they can to win games. They have so much pride in wearing the Hammarby badge.

"Stockholm is such a lovely city to live in and I can’t wait to explore a bit more of it. The weather has been sunny, but still very cold, so, I’m still getting used to that but overall I’m settling in well and can’t wait to prove myself to the team and the coach."

Proving herself is something she has already made strides in, winning Player of the Match on her debut.

"Making my debut was an amazing experience and one I will never forget, the girls made me feel very comfortable and helped me throughout the whole game.

"It was great to get Player of the Match but now I just need to be consistent and work hard, week in, week out, to perform at my best," the humble defender said.

Plying your trade overseas is all part of pursuing an international career in the beautiful game, but being so far from home also has its challenges.

Nevin says she is lucky to be flanked by CommBank Matildas' teammate, Kyra Cooney-Cross, who also signed with Hammarby at the same time.

"It’s my first time moving overseas to play for a club, so it’s definitely a big step and an amazing challenge for me.

"Having Kyra on this journey is great because it’s such a big step for both of us."

Nevin and Cooney-Cross aren't the first CommBank Matildas to play for Hammarby. The Swedish team has also been home to fan favourite, Elise Kellond-Knight.

With just a handful of matches under her belt so far, Nevin is hoping that consistency will ensure both her spot at Hammarby as well as with the national team.

The young defender has already begun to flourish with her new side, picking up her first goal in her side's narrow 3-1 loss to Linköping.

"Over the next couple of months, I hope to cement my spot in the team, so am making sure I work really hard every session.

"I have a lot to learn from Pablo Piñones Arce. He’s a really good coach who can teach me a lot and help my game.

"My other goal is to continue pushing myself so I get noticed for the national team."
