Sydney FC have completed the Premiership and Championship double in the A-League Women, overpowering Western United 4-0 in the Grand Final on Sunday.
An early goal to American Madison Haley from a Mackenzie Hawkesby corner helped settle the nerves for those in sky blue. Their lead was doubled by captain Nat Tobin, also from a corner, in the first half. They ran away with the result in the second half, a penalty scored by Princess Ibini and a second to Haley securing an emphatic victory.
Western United had their best opportunities to get back into the game in a spell towards the end of the first half. However, Jada Whyman stood tall, making a number of incredibly impressive saves to keep a clean sheet for her side and avoid any doubt in the result.
Cortnee Vine started for Sydney FC and looked impressive throughout, albeit causing CommBank Matildas fans a few heart palpitations after being on the receiving end of some tough challenges. She had a number of chances created by her breathtaking pace, forcing Hillary Beall into multiple saves, particularly in the second half.
Western United can certainly hold their heads high after what was a fantastic debut season in the competition. While Chloe Logarzo's injury woes meant that she did not contribute on the pitch as much as she would’ve liked – she was certainly a large part of Western’s off-field culture that contributed to much of their success.
However, it was Sydney FC’s day – the team with the most CommBank Matildas in the competition ultimately coming away with their first championship since 2018/19, and the double.
