Matildas At Home - A-League Women Round Two Review - Sydney FC Prevail in Big Blue

The A-League Women was all action this week, with multiple CommBank Matildas continuing to be involved.

The round kicked off with Chloe Logarzo's Western United heading across the ditch to play Wellington Phoenix for the first time. The Phoenix were in the game for the first half but were eventually overpowered by goals to Western United’s American core of Jessica McDonald, Sydney Cummings and a brace to Hannah Keane. Logarzo continued her recovery from her ACL injury, being subbed on in the 55th minute.

The 3 pm triple-header on Dubzone featured goals and excitement all round. Larissa Crummer scored her second goal in as many games as Brisbane Roar drew with Canberra United 1-1. Crummer’s goal cancelled out the opener from Canberra United’s Grace Jale.

Sydney FC came out on top in the Big Blue against Melbourne Victory 2-0. Jada Whyman kept her first clean sheet of the season and Cortnee Vine looked impressive, although spurned two early chances. Goals to new American signing Madison Haley and a Victory own goal proved the difference.

Alex Chidiac and Elise Kellond-Knight both started the game for Melbourne Victory but were unable to inspire their team to a second-half comeback.

In the third game of the triple-header, the Newcastle Jets secured their first victory in 2022 over the Western Sydney Wanderers. In a high-scoring affair, a hattrick to Sarah Griffith and a goal to Tara Andrews secured a 4-2 win. For the Wanderers part, they’ll be pleased to see the returning Amy Harrison on the scoresheet.

In Sunday’s only action, Perth Glory fell to visiting Adelaide United 1-0 in their first home game in Perth since the 2020/21 season. Dylan Holmes was the sole goalscorer in that game.

Next Week’s Action

There are only two timeslots that fans of the A-League Women need to worry about next week – a triple-header at 3pm Saturday and a double header at 4pm Sunday.

The first Sydney derby of the season will headline Dubzone on Saturday. The Western Sydney Wanderers will be looking to bounce back from their defeat against a Sydney FC side that is growing in confidence. Jada Whyman will start in goals and Cortnee Vine will be looking for her first goal of the season to help the Sky Blues over the line.

Meanwhile, Emma Checker will be hoping that she will be back in action for Melbourne City as they take on Larissa Crummer’s Brisbane Roar at Casey Fields. Newcastle Jets will host Perth Glory in the final game of the triple-header.

At Sunday 4pm, Alex Chidiac and Elise Kellond-Knight’s Melbourne Victory will host Wellington Phoenix. Meanwhile, Chloe Logarzo’s Western United will travel to Adelaide to play Adelaide United in what is turning out to be a top of the table clash.
