Matildas Abroad Review: Kellond-Knight returns; Foord, Gielnik and Raso score in pre-season

The Season returned in Sweden with Elise Kellond-Knight making her much-anticipated return; while Emily Gielnik, Caitlin Foord and Hayley Raso all found the back of the net in WSL pre-season games. 

Kicking things off in Sweden, Clare Polkinghorne and Katrina Gorry's Vittsjö GIK welcomed another Aussie, with Charli Grant signing a two-year contract extension with FC Rosengård and then getting traded to Vittsjö GIK for the rest of the season. 

Polkinghorne and Gorry made the start for Vittsjö, while Grant did not feature in the matchday squad after her loan move. Kristianstads DFF found the back of the net in the 54th minute, with Évelyne Viens scoring the match-winner.

Over in Eskilstuna, Elise Kellond-Knight made her first competitive start in 769 days, making a much-anticipated return and joined by Aussie duo Kyra Cooney-Cross and Courtney Nevin in the Starting XI. 


Hammarby secured their ninth win of the season, with Vilde Hasund finding the back of the net from a free kick to seal the 1-0 win over Eskilstuna United. 

Lastly in Sweden, Remy Siemsen's AIK faced a 1-0 loss to Piteå IF. AIK almost held on to see out a 0-0 draw, however, a 91st-minute winner from Hanna Karin Linnéa Andersson saw out the win. 

Siemsen was named on the bench and did not feature in the game.

Moving over to the USA, Alex Chidiac's Racing Louisville and Houston Dash played out a 0-0 draw in Texas.

Chidiac started for Racing, however, it was the hosts that had the better first half, testing Katie Lund on several occasions.


Finding a winner was made even more difficult when Louisville went down to 10, with Satara Murray given her marching orders after a second yellow card. 

Both sides would have to settle for a draw as Lousiville made it three consecutive draws in their hunt for a playoff spot.

Moving over to North Carolina, the Courage hosted Chloe Logarzo's Kansas City Current. 

Kansas City Current overcame a one-goal deficit three times before a late winner from substitute Claire Lavogez helped the side defeat Courage 4-3. Kansas extends its unbeaten run to 10 games and moves to fourth on the table.

Emily van Egmond's San Diego Wave FC faced a second consecutive loss of the season, going down 1-0 to the Orlando Pride. 

A handball in the box by Kaleigh Riehl gave Orlando a chance to open the scoring from the spot, with Meggie Dougherty Howard able to beat the keeper. Wave drops to third on the table after the loss, the lowest they've been since the opening round of the season.

Meanwhile, WSL pre-season has kicked off with two Aussies finding the back of the net. 
Firstly, Emily Gielnik's Aston Villa went down 6-1 to Sevilla in Marbella. Gielnik came off the bench to score the only goal for the Villians. 

Caitlin Foord and Steph Catley both started for Arsenal in their pre-season friendly against Brighton. The game ended 2-1, with Foord netting both of the Gunners' goals. 


Kyah Simon's Spurs went down 2-1 to Club América in The Women's Cup in Louisville. Simon did not feature in the loss with Tottenham now facing Tokyo Verdy in the fifth place match on Thursday. 

Mackenzie Arnold made the start for West Ham in their fifth pre-season outing, the Hammers collected a 2-1 win over Charlton Athletic.

Manchester City played their third pre-season friendly against Brighton, Hayley Raso found the back of the net in the 3-1 win.

Mary Fowler made her third pre-season start, while Alanna Kennedy appeared off the bench in the win. City will now prepare for their midweek UWCL clash against Tomiris-Turan. 

Moving over to Denmark, Clare Wheeler and Angie Beard's Fortuna Hjørring hosted AGF. 

Beard started as Fortuna showed a dominant display, beating AGF 5-0. Hjørring makes it two wins in a row to kick start their season, moving to the top of the ladder. 

Winonah Heatley's FC Nordsjælland beat KoldingQ 3-0, Heatley remained on the bench and did not feature in the win. 

Lastly, Tameka Yallop's SK Brann Kvinner played out a 1-1 draw against Stabæk. Yallop started for the hosts, but it was the visitors who would find the back of the net just before the half-hour mark. 


Brann sealed a late draw with a 94th-minute equaliser from Maria Dybwad Brochmann. The ladder leaders have one game remaining in the season and sit just three points clear of second place.
