Matildas Abroad Review: Fowler and Kerr score; West Ham shock Man City

Six Commonwealth Bank Matildas are sitting top of the table in their respective leagues; while a clean sheet for Mackenzie Arnold secures three points for West Ham. Here’s a look at all the Matildas abroad action.

Two Aussies found themselves on the scoresheet over a jam-packed weekend, with Arsenal and Lyon securing convincing wins to remain at the top of the table.

Sam Kerr's Chelsea was determined to avenge their loss against Brighton in the 2020-21 WSL season on a rainy afternoon at Kingsmeadow.

The Seagulls were the only team to defeat Chelsea in the previous season and the fixture started off the same as the last.

The hosts took the lead early with a powerful strike from Guro Reiten finding the back of the net.

Kerr nodded the Blues second of the day home, finding her fifth goal of the WSL campaign. A deep cross from Kirby was contested in the air by Kerr and the Brighton goalkeeper, with Kerr able to redirect the cross on goal.

The visitors found a reply early in the second half, with Danielle Carter finding Brighton's lone goal of the day. 

Fran Kirby continued her wonderful form this season picking up all three assists for Chelsea, threading the ball to an advancing Beth England to find Chelsea's third.

Arsenal continued their dominant start to the WSL season, defeating Emily Gielnik's Aston Villa 4-0. Villa was without their goalscoring hero Emily Gielnik, out through injury. 

After a tough first half, Arsenal found all four goals in the second half to keep their undefeated start to the season. 

Goals to Mana Iwabuchi, Kim Little and Katie McCabe saw out the win for the away side, with an outrageous strike from 40 yards out from McCabe the highlight of the game.

Steph Catley made her fourth start in a row for the Gunners, while Caitlin Foord came off the bench in the 63rd minute to see out the win.

Lydia Williams remained on the bench for the win.

Kyah Simon's Tottenham Hotspur is the other side in the WSL to maintain an undefeated start to the season. Defeating Leicester City 2-0.

Simon did not feature in the game, out with a hamstring injury.

Over in Manchester, Mackenzie Arnold and Tameka Yallop's West Ham shocked Manchester City in a 2-0 win. 

City suffered back-to-back defeats on home soil in the WSL for the first time since October 2014, with the 2-0 result ending City's 100% WSL record against the Hammers.

After a stunning debut last weekend, Yallop played out the entire win for West Ham, helping the visitors dominate in attack.

Mackenzie Arnold's performance in goals was one to remember, making seven saves and denying a one-on-one opportunity to keep a clean sheet. 

Dagny Brynjarsdottir's header late in the first half gave the visitors the lead, a goal from Yui Hasegawa late in the game sealed the win for the Hammers.

Ellen White looked to have the equaliser for City but the offside flag denied her first goal of the season. 

Moving over to France, Mary Fowler scored the lone goal in Montpellier HSC 2-1 loss to Fleury 91. 

Fowler came off the bench in the 58th minute, netting her first of the season in the 94th minute. 

Lyon continued their undefeated start to the season, beating Bordeaux 4-1.

Bordeaux shocked Lyon early, finding the opener just three minutes into the game, the first goal Lyon has conceded this season.  

Lyon quickly responded finding the equaliser just four minutes later through Catarina Macario.

Ellie Carpenter played the entire 90 minutes, helping Lyon to their fourth win of the season.

In Sweden, Teagan Micah and Charli Grant's first place FC Rosengård took on Dylan Holmes' second place BK Häcken with the battle for the Damallsvenskan champion heating up. 

A rainy night in Gothenburg proved difficult for Rosengård, with Häcken coming away 2-0 winners and handing Rosengård their first loss of the season.

Micah made some crucial saves to deny Häcken's clear chances, however, the hosts were too strong. Grant and Holmes remained on the bench in the fixture.

Clare Polkinghorne's played the entire 90 minutes for Vittsjö GIK in their 3-0 win over Linköping. With the race to secure third place for a spot in next season's UWCL heating up, Vittsjö is just seven points behind the current third place. 

Over in Norway, HB Køge defeated Fortuna Hjørring 4-0, with Hjørring facing their first defeat of the season. 

Angela Beard, Indiah-Paige Riley and Alex Huynh started for Hjørring, with this start the first appearance for Huynh since moving from Napoli. 

Clare Wheeler was an unused substitute. 

Jenna McCormick played all 90 minutes in AGF 1-0 loss to Farum.

Our final destination takes us to Japan, with Alex Chidiac coming off the bench in the 80th minute in JEF United Chiba 3-0 loss to Nippon TV Tokyo.
