Matildas Abroad: Gielnik and Vittsjo continue winning ways

It was another busy weekend for our Westfield Matildas Abroad with a full round of action in the Norwegian Toppserien and Sweden’s Damallsvenskan, while in France there was a major Cup semi-final between two clubs that have each signed a Westfield Matilda in recent weeks.

Norway

Katrina Gorry and Clare Polkinghorne both started and played the full 90 minutes for Avaldsnses in their Round 5 clash against Sandviken. Avaldsnes got off to the perfect start with a goal in the third minute before Sandviken powered back, scoring three goals to win the contest 3-1.

Ladder-leaders LSK Kvinner kept their winning run going with a superb comeback to defeat Lyn 3-2. It was a significant night for Karly Roestbakken, who played the full 90 minutes for her new club. Lyn struck either side of half-time before LSK found their groove to overturn the deficit and maintain their undefeated run.

It was tough evening for Teagan Micah and Arna-Bjørnar. Micah played the full 90 minutes between the sticks as the side lost 3-0 to Vålerenga.

Sweden

Vittsjö had to dig deep to take all three points in their Damallsvenskan match against KIF Örebro, with Emily Gielnik being substituted on in the 71st minute to help her side win 2-1.

Vittsjö were down 0-1 when Gielnik came in but scored twice in the final fifteen minutes, with the Westfield Matilda sending in a cross that led to the first goal.

France

The all-conquering Olympique Lyonnais booked their place in the Coupe de France Féminine final after a tense 1-0 win over EA Guingamp. Laura Brock was a late substitute for EA Guingamp while Ellie Carpenter didn’t see any action for OL.

Olympique Lyonnais will face Paris Saint-Germain in the Cup final on August 10.
