Kyra Cooney-Cross joins Arsenal F.C. in the WSL

CommBank Matildas' midfielder Kyra Cooney-Cross has officially signed for Arsenal for the upcoming Barclays Women's Super League season, making the move after spending the last year with Hammarby.

Cooney-Cross joins the contingent of Australians at Arsenal, looking to play alongside Australian teammates, Steph Catley and Caitlin Foord, this upcoming WSL season.

An impressive FIFA Women’s World Cup debut saw the midfielder feature in every game for Australia.

Fans of Arsenal are fondly looking back on the Gunners’ icon Ian Wright’s tweet throughout the World Cup, impressed with the midfielder's performance in Australia’s group stage win over Canada.

Cooney-Cross makes the move to the Gunners after spending the last season and a half with Hammarby in Sweden, helping the side to their first trophy since 1995 with their Swedish Women's Cup victory earlier this year, Cooney-Cross playing 80 minutes in Hammarby's 3-0 victory over BK Häcken.

Arsenal finished third in the WSL last season, 11 points behind the ladder leaders Chelsea. The Conti Cup reigning champions will kick off their WSL campaign against Liverpool, however, were unable to qualify for European football this season after their loss to Paris FC last week.

“I’m so excited to join this club,” said Kyra. “Arsenal just felt right as soon as I heard about the interest. I’m really looking forward to experiencing the atmosphere at Emirates Stadium in front of a big crowd for our first game there this season. I can’t wait to get started and help us achieve something big together.”

The midfielder could be in line to make her first appearance for the Gunners in their WSL opener against Liverpool on Monday the 2nd of October at 12am AEST.
