CommBank Matilda Holly McNamara will miss the remainder of the 2023/24 A-League Women’s season and has subsequently been ruled out of the CommBank Matildas’ squad for the upcoming internationals against Canada.
Following confirmation from Melbourne City FC, scans showed that the 20-year-old ruptured her right anterior crucial ligament (ACL) in the team’s Round 5 clash with the Newcastle Jets FC on Sunday.
CommBank Matildas’ Head Coach, Tony Gustavsson, expressed the support of the team for the A-League Women’s star.
“With the enormous hard work and resilience Holly has shown over the past 18 months, this latest injury news is devastating to hear,” Gustavsson said. “Holly has been a true professional in her journey back to earn a recall to the national team and that is a testament to her character.”
“Unfortunately, it's not the news we were hoping for, however, Football Australia’s national teams’ staff will be on hand to provide Holly with support and care as needed.”
“We would like to thank Melbourne City for their support of Holly’s recovery and during this difficult time,” Gustavsson concluded.
McNamara will undergo surgery for the ACL repair and commence rehabilitation. No timeframe has been put on her return to football.
