Football Australia names former Swedish international Jens Fjellström to CommBank Matildas Coaching Staff

Football Australia is pleased to announce the appointment of former Swedish international and well-respected coach and analyst, Jens Fjellström, to the CommBank Matildas coaching staff.

The highly experienced Fjellström (FIELL-STROM) has been appointed as an additional full-time Assistant Coach of the CommBank Matildas.  His engagement completes the technical staff positions that includes Melissa Andreatta (Assistant Coach), Tony Franken (Goalkeeping Coach), Marty Judge (Video Analyst) and Sharna Naidu (Assistant Video Analyst).

Fjellström expressed his anticipation on taking on an expanded role with the team as he said: "The Matildas squad is full of quality, and I will do everything I can to make them and my staff colleagues to reach their full potential at the World Cup next year."

"While Tony and the whole technical team will have a holistic perspective, my focus will be working with players on an individual level to nurture and build their capacity, both in and out of camps. We believe a lot of improvement happens away from the national team environment so if we can assist our players' progress individually, that will bring better performances and results to the group. Every percentage counts in the coming months."

Jens Fjellström joins the CommBank Matildas after a twelve-year professional career as a player in Sweden and China, and along the way earning three appearances for the Swedish National Team.  Upon his playing retirement, Fjellström seamlessly transitioned to roles in football coaching and analysis including as an assistant coach with Malmö FF in the UEFA Europa League group stage and playoffs.

He has also amassed extensive experience as an opposition scouting consultant including with the US Women’s National Team during their FIFA Women’s World Cup France 2019™ title-winning run and with the Danish National Team during their EURO 2020 qualification campaign.

As well as his work in the technical box, the Swede has also spent almost two decades in the commentary box as a television pundit working with the Premier League, La Liga, the Swedish Allsvenskan and covering three FIFA World Cups™, three UEFA European Championships and the Tokyo 2020 Olympics Women’s Football Tournament.  Fjellström is also globally respected in sports analytics and is a frequent speaker at sports conferences.

CommBank Matildas head coach Tony Gustavsson is confident that Fjellström can be an asset to the team heading into the FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia and New Zealand 2023™.

“Jens is not only an excellent coach and analyst but he is also become well regarded within our team in the short time he is connected with us,” said Gustavsson.

“With his extensive experience in football, he adds a different perspective of things tactically, both for the collective, but also individually with each player.  Jens has demonstrated in the past that the way he works with players and staff is beneficial for our environment and we are all looking forward to having him join us full-time.”

Fjellström has linked up with the CommBank Matildas during the October FIFA Women’s International Window in London ahead of their friendlies against South Africa and Denmark.
