Foord and Logarzo spark thrilling comeback as Matildas stun Brazil

Caitlin Foord and Chloe Logarzo’s goals led the charge as the Matildas completed a thrilling 3-2 comeback win against Brazil to reignite their FIFA Women’s World Cup™ campaign.

Six-time FIFA World Player of the Year, Martha, became the first player to score in five FIFA World Cups™ when she slotted in a 27th-minute penalty to give the South Americans the lead in Montpellier.

Golden Boot leader Cristiane then headed in her fourth goal of France 2019™ on 38 minutes, before Foord’s strike on the brink of half-time handed Australia a lifeline.

Logarzo drilled the Matildas level on 58 minutes before Monica headed past her own goalkeeper six minutes later as Ante Milicic’s side inflicted Brazil's first FIFA Women's World Cup™ group stage loss in 24 years.

With Clare Polkinghorne missing out with a hamstring issue, Steph Catley slid inside to centre-back with Elise Kellond-Knight filling in. The stand-in left back fired in the first shot on goal after seven minutes, lifting her strike over the crossbar.

The Canarinhas barely came out of their own half in the first 20 minutes and the Matildas threatened when Tameka Yallop was hauled down in the box by Thaisa. A penalty was given but the decision was overturned after a VAR review spotted a handball by Yallop in the build-up.

Seven minutes later, the Canarinhas were awarded a penalty when Kellond-Knight had a handful of Leticia Santos jersey and the FIFA Women’s World Cup™’s all-time top scorer, Marta, stepped up to net her 16th competition goal.

Captain Sam Kerr threatened as the Matildas looked for a quick response but an end-to-end move on 38 minutes saw Debinha’s excellent run and cross converted by Cristiane to net her fourth of the tournament and double Brazil’s lead.

FIFA Women’s World Cup™ debutant Emily Gielnik’s shot was saved and Kerr’s header was cleared off the goal-line by Monica, before Foord finally found a way through after Logarzo flicked on Yallop’s cross in first-half stoppage time.

The Matildas came out firing after the interval when Logarzo’s wicked ball into the box flashed across Kerr’s out-stretched foot and landed straight in the corner of Barbara’s goal just before the hour mark.

Van Egmond's ball forward was headed into her own net by Monica on 66 minutes and, after originally being ruled out for offside against Kerr, a VAR review overturned the call and the game was flipped on its head.

There was time for a debut for 18-year-old Karly Roestbakken as the Matildas played out a tense finale to record a fifth straight win against Brazil and their first points of  FIFA Women’s World Cup France 2019.™
