Brewer buzzing to be back in Westfield Matildas mix

Newcastle Jets defender Hannah Brewer is intent on making a second chance with the Westfield Matildas count after winning her first call-up in four years.

The 24-year-old hasn't featured on the international scene since the 2014 Cyprus Cup, where she made a solitary appearance in a 4-2 defeat to Scotland.

But a brilliant Westfield W-League season earned her a recall to the 22-player Algarve Cup squad and the Jets star is determined to maximise the opportunity.

"It's a big stepping stone for me," Brewer told matildas.footballaustralia.com.au.

"I haven't been here for four years, so I'm looking forward to bettering my football and playing with Australia's best.

"I've worked hard in the last four years and hard work obviously pays off in time.

"I had a good W-League season and to be rewarded with this is awesome!"

Australia open their Algarve Cup against Norway on Thursday morning (AEDT) ahead of clashes with hosts Portugal and Asian Football Confederation rivals China PR.

Despite being the best-ranked team at the tournament, Brewer insists the Aussies won't be taking their opposition lightly.

"The girls have been playing at a really high standard and they only want to get better and improve on what they've previously achieved," she said.

"An international game is a tough game no matter who you're playing.

"Going in, we'll be confident but we know it will be tough."
