Australian community celebrates Matildas historic quarter-final win

On a historic night for football in Australia, the Matildas qualified for the semi-finals of the Olympic Games for the very first time. Defeating Great Britain 4-3 in extra time, there was support from all corners of the globe after the win.

Up against Team Great Britain for the first time in a major tournament, the Matildas pulled off a remarkable 4-3 victory to progress to the Olympic Games semi-finals.

Alanna Kennedy gave Australia the lead after nodding home a pinpoint header from a Steph Catley corner.  Team Great Britain would add two through Ellen White and the Matildas dreams looked to be slipping away.

Up stepped Sam Kerr, our skipper would find her first of the night in the 88th minute to send the game into extra time. A penalty save at one end by Teagan Micah kept the scores at a deadlock.

Then teenager Mary Fowler would find the Matildas third, her shot from outside the box taking a deflection off a GB defender. Just seconds into the second period of extra time Kerr would rise again to find the fourth and seal our historic semi-final berth.

Jubilant celebrations on social media continued throughout the night. Support from Olympians such as Sally Pearson and Jess Fox truly encapsulated how special the win was for Australian sport.
