Australia reaffirms bid to host FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023

Football Federation Australia (FFA) today reaffirmed the intention to bid to host the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023TM following the announcement of the formal bidding process by FIFA overnight.

Since officially announcing the intention to bid in June 2017, the Australian Federal Government has provided $5 million in funding to prepare the formal bid submission.

The FFA Bid team has been working with multiple stakeholders to prepare the technical components of the bid.

FFA Chairman Chris Nikou welcomed the announcement from FIFA in regards to the bidding timeline.

“Australia is strongly aligned to FIFA's global vision for women's football, and committed to growing the game across Asia-Pacific region. With our strong record of successfully hosting major events including the AFC Asian Cup 2015TM, we are confident of submitting a compelling bid for Australia to host FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023TM,” said Mr Nikou.

“I would like to thank Australian Federal Government for their support of our bid campaign, which will underpin another incredible opportunity to showcase the best of Australia to the huge community of football and sporting fans around the world.

“We look forward to working with key stakeholders in Australia including Clubs, Member Federations, PFA and the Women’s Council to prepare a compelling bid that unites the Australian football community,” concluded Nikou.

FFA Chief Executive Officer David Gallop AM reiterated the importance of Australia's bid to FFA's vision for the game.

“Hosting the FIFA Women's World CupTM would provide even more opportunities for women and children to play the world game. This bid is a strategic play towards increasing female participation at all levels, and supports our ambition to make football the number one sport in the nation,” concluded Gallop.

The FIFA Women’s World CupTM is the ultimate competition in women’s football and is held every four years. The most recent FIFA Women’s World CupTM, in Canada in 2015, saw a total match attendance of 1.35 million and a global television audience of 764 million with more than 80 million viewers in China and more than 60 million viewers in the United States.

The FIFA Women's World Cup 2023TM would see 24 teams compete over 52 matches, hosted across a number of locations.
