The Matildas will face USA, Germany and Zambia/Morocco in Group B of the Paris 2024™ Olympics Games Women’s Football Tournament taking place from 25 July to 10 August 2024 in seven venues across seven cities in France.
The Olympic Final Draw took place during the early morning AEDT at the Pulse Building in the French capital.
Australia will play their group stage matches in Marseille and Nice and will open their Olympic campaign against Germany on 25 July 2024 (7.00pm local / 3.00am AEST) at the Stade de Marseille, Marseille.
Three days later they will take on the winner of April’s Confederation of African Football play-off between Zambia and Morocco on 28 July 2024 (7.00pm local / 3.00am AEST) at the Stade de Nice, Nice. As they did at the Tokyo 2020™ Olympics, the Matildas will conclude their group stage action against the United States on 31 July 2024 (7.00pm local / 3.00am AEST) returning to the Stade de Marseille, Marseille.
Australia has met the United States (current world no. 4) on 33 occasions (W1, D5, L27) with the last fixture between the two nations a 4-3 loss in the Tokyo 2020™ Olympics Bronze Medal match.
Meanwhile, the Matildas and Germany (current world no. 5) have faced off in five previous fixtures (W1, D1, L3) including a 2-2 draw at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. The last meeting between the two sides was in April 2021. July’s tournament would mark the first meeting between Australia and Zambia (current world no. 65) or Morocco (current world no. 68).
Paris 2024™ will be the fifth appearance of the Matildas in the Olympic Women’s Football Tournament (2000, 2004, 2016, 2020, 2024) with the team recording their best-ever finish of fourth at the Tokyo 2020™ Olympics.
Prior to the Final Draw, Australia, currently ranked 12th in the FIFA Women’s World rankings were seeded in Pot 3 alongside Brazil (current world no. 10) and Colombia (current world no. 23).
The Paris 2024™ Olympic Women’s Football Tournament will feature 12 teams across three groups. The top two in each group will advance to the quarter-finals and will be joined by the two best third-place teams.
The Final Draw also sees hosts France, Colombia, reigning Olympic champions Canada and New Zealand in Group A, while reigning world champions Spain, Japan, Brazil and Nigeria/South Africa will do battle in Group C.
Matildas fans will be able to catch the team one final time on Australian shores in the ’Til It’s Done Farewell international series against China PR in Adelaide (31 May) and Sydney (3 June) and live on Football Australia’s broadcast partner, 10 Paramount.
