Alanna Kennedy: 'Wherever I go, wherever I play, I want to win games'

Westfield Matilda Alanna Kennedy is ready and raring to get back into a team environment after her move to Tottenham. She spoke to English media ahead of the FA WSL season’s start this weekend.

Like many footballers around the world, Kennedy had been training on her own while home in Australia. The move to Spurs is a welcome return to group training.

“I'm definitely looking forward to get getting back even just into training for me," said Kennedy.

"I haven't played or been in a team environment for a while under the current circumstances so I'm really looking forward to that first game against West Ham and I understand it’s a London derby so even more exciting as well.”

The 25-year-old is no stranger to playing abroad, having played in the NWSL for Western New York Flash and current parent club Orlando Pride.

However, like many of her Westfield Matildas teammates, this will be her first foray into Europe. The strong football culture in England presents itself as an exciting opportunity for Kennedy.

“From being an Aussie and seeing England from the outside, it's always that they live and breathe football. So I imagine there's going to be a lot of passion involved, and I'm really excited to experience the atmosphere and play a new style of football over here.

“I obviously played four or five seasons in the US and I think there's probably two different styles of football. So I'm looking forward to playing my first game and getting used to a new league.”

Kennedy will be coming up against some of the biggest names and clubs in world football but will also be going head to head with some well-known opponents.

“There's quite a few teams now who have at least one Aussie so I'm sure I'll be seeing plenty of familiar faces each week."

"I think we're all excited to compete against each other. It's something that you get used to playing all across the world in different clubs. So it'll be no different here.

Obviously, I just want to win every game and then I'll catch up with them as a mate afterwards, but on the field, it's all business.”

Kennedy has enjoyed plenty of success at club level both in the Westfield W-League and the NWSL and is looking to bring that same energy to Tottenham.

“Wherever I go, wherever I play, my mentality is always the same thing. I want to win games. The players that we've recruited over the offseason, for this year, will just strengthen the squad.

"We're hoping to win as many games as possible and put ourselves in a good position of being in the finals towards the end of the season to compete to win a title.”

Kennedy’s Tottenham will come up against West Ham and her Westfield Matildas teammates Mackenzie Arnold and Emily van Egmond Sunday night Australian time.
