Journey to 2023 - Thin Banner

After moving through the group stage with three wins from three games, 24 goals scored and only one goal conceded, Tony Gustavsson's side topped Group B which put them on course to face South Korea.

The Commonwealth Bank Matildas started with an 18-0 demolition of Indonesia before a four-goal second half helped them to a 4-0 win over the Philippines.

Against Thailand, a largely inexperienced squad was put on the park, highlighted by the front line of Cortnee Vine, Remy Siemsen, and Holly McNamara. Between the trio heading into this clash, they boasted six senior caps.

The Commonwealth Bank Matildas were able to net in both halves with the new players combining to set up Emily van Egmond in the 39th minute.

Sam Kerr was able to score the winner once she entered the match, capitalising on a fumble from the Thai goalkeeper in the 80th minute.

South Korea and Australia are familiar foes and with a spot in the AFC Women's Asian Cup semi finals on the line, both sides have everything to play for.

The winner of this clash will face the winner of the quarter final between Chinese Taipei and the Philippines.

Squad news

Tameka Yallop was unavailable due to her positive COVID-19 test for the Thailand game.

However, the match saw the remaining members of the squad earn some game time ensuring that every member of Gustavsson's 23 player squad has played some match minutes.

This flexibility and rotation have allowed players to rest and manage their loads in order to be ready for the knockout stages.

Our Opponent

South Korea is a side the Commonwealth Bank Matildas are familiar with having played them 19 times.

Australia has the ascendency in this head-to-head, winning 13 of the clashes with three draws and three losses rounding out the results.

South Korea finished second in Group C behind Japan thanks to their 1-1 draw with Nadeshiko.

The team is headlined by Ji So-yun - a team mate of Sam Kerr's at Chelsea. Throughout the group stage, Ji has been South Korea's most important attacking outlet.

Of South Korea's six goals scored in the group stage, she has netted four of them.

While the most recent meeting between these sides was a 4-1 Commonwealth Bank Matildas victory at the 2019 Cup of Nations, this match will be a difficult test.
