2022 AFC Women's Asian Cup Preview - Australia v Thailand

The Commonwealth Bank Matildas' final group stage match sees them face familiar opposition in Thailand.

Journey to 2023 - Thin Banner

At the last edition of the AFC Women's Asian Cup in 2018, Australia and Thailand met just before the tournament in a friendly and then again in the semi-final.

The team couldn't be separated after extra time with the score tied at two apiece.

It took penalties and some heroics from Mackenzie Arnold in goal to secure the Commonwealth Bank Matildas' passage to the final.

Now four years later, the teams meet once again. Australia is guaranteed qualification while Thailand has everything to fight for.

The Commonwealth Bank Matildas have so far enjoyed two wins - an 18-0 drubbing of Indonesia and a 4-0 victory over the Philippines.

Almost every player in the squad has been given some game time meaning Holly McNamara and Cortnee Vine made their debuts while the likes of Sam Kerr and Emily van Egmond are in fine scoring form.

Squad News

Only three players in the squad have yet to see the pitch - Lydia Williams, Emily Gielnik, and Charli Grant. They will be hoping to get on the park against Thailand.

One player who will not be available for this match is Tameka Yallop as she has tested positive for COVID-19 and is being monitored by Football Australia's medical staff. All other players and staff have returned negative tests.

Our Opponents

Thailand had a successful 2018 tournament and qualified for its first-ever FIFA Women's World Cup in 2019. They will be hoping to repeat history and qualify for the Australian and New Zealand edition in 2023.

The team booked their ticket to India 2022 after defeating Palestine 7-0 and Malaysia 4-0 in the qualifying tournament.
