Match preview: Westfield Matildas v Argentina

History beckons for the Westfield Matildas as they look to claim the inaugural Cup of Nations on Wednesday night at AAMI Park.

The tournament success would provide the perfect landing pad for Ante Milicic as preparations continue ahead of the FIFA Women’s World Cup France 2019 in June.

CONThin

With just over three months remaining until Australia’s opening fixture against Italy, this clash is one of the last opportunities for Milicic to see his squad in match-intense conditions.

Standing in the Westfield Matildas’ way is an Argentina outfit that has improved throughout the tournament and will be eager to spoil Australia’s party.

After falling 5-0 to Korea Republic on Matchday One, the Albicelestes put up a good fight against New Zealand before eventually being overrun 2-0.

We give you all the info ahead of Wednesday night’s clash in Melbourne for what promises to be a sensational end to a brilliant week and a half of football.

Form

The contrasts don’t get any greater than this.

Argentina have lost two games on the trot in the Cup of Nations, conceding seven goals along the way and failing to find the back of the net.

The Westfield Matildas, on the other hand, raced out the blocks with a 2-0 win over New Zealand, before building on Ante Milicic’s attacking brand of football with a 4-1 clinic against Korea Republic.

In saying that, defensive stalwart Clare Polkinghorne kept her side’s feet firmly on the ground noting there is still room for improvement in the lead up to France.
