Young Matildas into AFF semis after draw with Myanmar

In front of around 15,000 fans, the Young Matildas drew 1-1 with host nation Myanmar on Sunday meaning the Australians finished top of their group at the AFF Women's Championship.

Australia are now set to face Thailand in the semi finals on Tuesday.

Against Myanmar, the host nation sat very deep and allowed Australia controlled possession from the beginning of the game.

But in the 41st minute Myanmar took the lead through a 30 yard strike that flew into the top corner

The second half was played in the same pattern as the 45, with the Young Matildas controlling possession, and the hosts sat deep and compact and looking to counter.

But with 13 minutes of regulation time left, Georgia Plessas’ cross-shot ended up in the goal and the Aussies were level.

The game finished 1-1 meaning Australia finished top of the group.

Coach Craig Deans was pleased with his side’s comeback following the result.

“Obviously we are happy to come back from a goal down and get a point to take us top of the group.

“It was a fantastic experices for the players to play in front of a crowd like we did tonight and they will take this experience for the the AFC Qualifiers and AFC Championships later in the year.

“We now look forward to the semi final against Thailand, which we will start preparing for immediately.”
