Westfield Matildas in the Westfield W-League - what's in store for Round 7?

Amy Harrison fired Western Sydney Wanderers to a statement win last week and the Westfield Matildas midfielder can help lead them to the summit of the Westfield W-League in Round 7.

Harrison was on the scoresheet as the Red and Black toppled Champions and Harbour City rivals, Sydney FC, at Bankwest Stadium and three more points would be another milestone for Dean Heffernan’s revived side, with leaders Melbourne City on a bye.

Canberra United are the hosts trying to halt the Wanderers juggernaut in the round’s opener on Boxing Day, while Sydney FC aim to recover from their day to forge against Adelaide United on Sunday.

Wanderers set to go from worst to first with another win

Last year, Western Sydney finished rock bottom of the Westfield W-League with only one win. What a difference an off-season can make.

Three points for Harrison and company at McKellar Park will see Wanderers surge to the top of the competition with more points than they collected in the past two seasons combined (15).

Karly Roestbakken and the Green Machine stand in their path and the capital club will be no pushovers. Heather Garriock’s side tightened their grip on fourth place last week with a win against Adelaide, but a tougher test awaits them on Thursday in the ACT.

Finals chase hots up with Victory in pursuit

Premiers Melbourne Victory hold five points from five games and it’s now or never in their chase for more silverware in 2019/20.

Westfield Matildas defenders Jenna McCormick and Teigen Allen travel to play 2018/19 Grand Finalists, Perth Glory, in Western Australia aiming to keep their Finals Series hopes alive.

Glory collected their first competition point last week against Canberra and sixth-placed Victory will pose another strong challenge at Dorrien Gardens.

Sky Blues aim to heal wounds against Lady Reds

There’s no doubting Sydney FC will be hurting after getting turned over 5-0 by their noisy neighbours Western Sydney Wanderers last week.

The Westfield W-League Champions and their Westfield Matildas, Alanna Kennedy, Caitlin Foord and Princess Ibini, play host to the basement dwellers, Adelaide United, who are yet to get off the mark for the season.

Westfield Matildas goalkeeper Sarah Willacy has been in inspired form as the Lady Reds have been competitive in every game, while 16-year-old striker Mary Fowler will look to catch the Sky Blues licking their wounds.

ROUND 6: Team of the Week

Highlights: Melbourne Victory 0-0 Brisbane Roar

Roar have fourth in their sights

Brisbane Roar close out Round 7 seeking to build on their three-match unbeaten run when they host Newcastle Jets at Lions FC Stadium.

The Jets come off the bye three points behind their fifth-placed opponents and a win in Queensland would ignite their season.

Hayley Raso, Mackenzie Arnold, Clare Polkinghorne, Katrina Gorry and Tameka Yallop will be determined to prevent that from happening.

Three points back from fourth-placed Canberra, Roar cannot afford to lose much more ground on the Finals Series places as we approach the mid-point of the Westfield W-League season.
