Round 9 of the Westfield W-League 2018/19 Season gives fans more access than ever before to their favourite Westfield Matildas, as all four games will be televised LIVE on FOX SPORTS and or SBS VICELAND.

Brisbane Roar’s trio face Ellie Carpenter’s Canberra United who must regather quickly following their 3-0 loss to Melbourne City. 

Then on Friday night, there will be up to three Westfield Matildas as Melbourne Victory host Perth Glory in a top of the table clash at AAMI Park.

Emily van Egmond’s Newcastle Jets will be without a suspended Larissa Crummer for their clash against a Michelle Heyman-inspired Adelaide United, while Western Sydney Wanderers host Melbourne City’s Westfield Matildas contingent on New Year’s Day.

Canberra United v Brisbane Roar
Thursday, 7:30pm AEDT

For all their promise in the opening round, Canberra United have perhaps not quite captured the consistency fans have yearned to see over the past two years. 

Their 2-0 victory over Sydney FC seemed to be the turning point in their season and a platform for upward motion, yet a 2-2 draw to Western Sydney Wanderers followed by a 3-0 loss on Melbourne City’s turf suggest consistency is a long way yet. 

Ellie Carpenter has epitomised Canberra’s free-flowing attacking football, chipping in with two goals and deputising in the midfield on more than one occasion. 

Brisbane Roar welcome back Katrina Gorry following her red card against Melbourne Victory in Round 7. 

The Westfield Matilda will be a welcome inclusion to strengthen Brisbane’s spine against a Canberra United outfit oozing with class in the form of Refiloe Jane, Rhoda Mulaudzi and Denise O'Sullivan.

Further back, Clare Polkinghorne and Mackenzie Arnold appeared to have escaped their win against Western Sydney Wanderers unscathed, so keep an eye on those two.

Melbourne Victory v Perth Glory
Friday, 5:20pm AEDT

AAMI Park hosts a top of the table clash on Friday afternoon as Melbourne Victory welcome a rampant, free-flowing Perth Glory. 

The women from the west lead the goalscoring charts with 19 goals in seven games, 15 of them coming from either Sam Kerr (8), Alyssa Mautz (4) or Rachel Hill (3). 

Perth’s attacking trio won’t have a free pass into Melbourne’s box, though. 

They will have to contend with Westfield Matilda Laura Alleway, and be on their toes to nullify Emily Gielnik, with both players enjoying fruitful campaigns to date. 

Combined, the pair have contributed four goals and one assist for club and country, an impressive output considering there are still five rounds remaining in the Westfield W-League.

Newcastle Jets v Adelaide United
Sunday, 4:30pm AEDT

Newcastle Jets must stem a goal-hungry Adelaide United outfit without key defender Larissa Crummer following her straight red card against Perth Glory in Round 7. 

Crummer brought down Sam Kerr, earning an early shower and a three-week break, on 26 minutes.

Emily van Egmond and Gema Simon are expected to take the field against Adelaide United, facing off directly against Westfield Matilda teammate Michelle Heyman. 

Heyman grabbed her first  goal in Reds colours during their 3-2 win over Melbourne Victory, adding to her two league assists. 

The game is a must-win for Newcastle, who sit in eighth spot on seven points, five points behind Adelaide who are in fourth spot. 

So the equation is simple for Newcastle: a loss will create an eight-point gap between them and a potential finals spot — a big bridge to climb at this point in the season.

Western Sydney Wanderers v Melbourne City
Tuesday, 5:20pm AEDT

Western Sydney Wanderers host Melbourne City at a time where they are 11 points adrift of a finals spot, and yet to register a win in the Westfield W-League 2018/19 Season. 

There have been positives for Dan Barrett’s side throughout the campaign, including the emergence of Nicole Simonsen and the form of Georgia Yeoman-Dale, however it has not been enough. 

City meanwhile are beginning to hit their straps as their Westfield Matildas are all playing — and, more importantly, firing on all cylinders. 

Kyah Simon and Tameka Butt combined for City’s second goal in their 3-0 victory over Canberra United, while Elise Kellond-Knight remarkably leads the lead for most crosses with 44 in six games. 

Lydia Williams has had a busy 2018/19 Season, having faced 39 shots on target, the equal-highest alongside Aubrey Bledsoe and Britt Eckerstrom . 

Now only two points out of finals contention, a win for City could put them amongst the top four and in a promising position as we approach the final bend.
