They have helped the Westfield Matildas qualify for the Tokyo Olympics and have a Westfield W-League Premiership safe in their keeping as well.
Now Melbourne City’s six Australian stars will look to cap a remarkable few months by winning the Westfield W-League 2020 Grand Final.
City’s Westfield Matildas contingent – skipper Steph Catley, Lydia Williams, Ellie Carpenter, Aivi Luik, Emily van Egmond and Kyah Simon – were superb in their side’s 5-1 Semi Final win over Western Sydney Wanderers.
Simon led the way against the Wanderers with a brace, while Catley picked up two assists and Carpenter one as unbeaten City continued their 2019/20 dominance.
And the Aussie six, plus recently capped Westfield Matilda Emma Checker, will be supremely confident of completing a perfect campaign in the decider against Sydney FC at AAMI Park on Saturday.
City prevailed in their only previous meeting this season, edging past the Sky Blues 2-1 back in December with van Egmond among the goals that day.
Rado Vidosic’s side will again be favourites in this one, despite coming up against the defending Champions.
Sydney FC booked their Grand Final spot with a gritty 1-0 win over Melbourne Victory on Saturday.
While Veronica Latkso’s early goal was the difference, Ante Juric’s side wouldn’t have kept a clean sheet if not for the exploits of defensive rock Alanna Kennedy.
The Westfield Matildas centre-back was at the peak of her powers to stop Victory’s attacks, winning all winning all five of her tackles, making three interceptions and 11 clearances over the 90 minutes.
If Sydney FC are to go back-to-back and derail the City steam train, Kennedy will need to do all that and more in the decider.
